Bicycle Accidents

"I Hate To Even Think About Bicycle Accidents..."

...You wear a helmet and look out for cars and pedestrians.  Can you ever get into bicycle accidents? Possibly, because if you follow safety rules, you only lessen the chance of having an accident.

Some risk always exists.  A car may not see you in its rearview mirror or a pedestrian can cross the street right in front of you.

And when you or the other party gets an injury, bicycle insurance can help.

However, most riders know that you can't go to an insurance company and ask for bicycle coverage, like you would for a home or a car.

Instead, riders look for policies that include bicycles as part of the coverage.

For instance, personal liability coverage for a homeowner's policy can include unintentional damage to another person's bicycle.  So if you have a bicycle accident and you had no intention of wrecking someone else's bicycle, this coverage would pay damages on your behalf.

Personal Liability

Likewise, renter's insurance can include personal liability.  But you should check your policy to make sure you understand the terms.  And, if you are looking for a new renter's or homeowner's policy, shop carefully to get the best coverage.

For damage or theft to your bicycle, the personal property aspect of a renter's or homeowner's insurance policy can be useful.  But, some policies only cover your bicycle if it's at home, so once again, shop with care.

If your bicycle is ever stolen, you will need proof that you actually owned a bicycle.  You should prepare for this situation by taking photographs or videotape footage of your bicycle.  Then, if you ever need to file a claim, you'll have proof of ownership.

Every year, the National Bike Registry estimates that 1 million bicycles are stolen every year, adding up to a loss of at least $200 million.  You can register your bicycle with the National Bike Registry so that if the bicycle is stolen, a record will be in this database.

AIG Homeowners Insurance not only has bicycle coverage for owners, but also for renters.  This company's policies cover bicycles, as well as other kinds of property.  You can also have coverage for medical expenses and personal liability under renters' policies.

Riders who live in Great Britain have access to insurance specifically for bicycles and accessories, sometimes a value up to 1500 pounds.  Here, in the United States, this type of insurance may soon be available - we already have motorcycle insurance, don't we?

Cover Lost Wages

For now, we have auto insurance, something that most states require drivers to carry and that can cover bicycle accidents.  Medical payments or personal injury coverage may be included.  And your auto insurance may also cover lost wages while you recover from a bicycle accident. But, of course, you have to get a policy that provides this much coverage.

Medical insurance can help cover health costs related to bicycle accidents.  If you are not at fault, then your health insurance company may try to recover damages from the other party.

No one wants to get into a bicycle accident.  You ride as safely as you can, yet the unexpected can always happen.  For those times, insurance coverage for bicycle accidents can save you from a financial crisis.  That way, you can concentrate on cycling.
