"Hey Jack, Get a Bicycle Rack!"

  ...If you want an easy way to take your bicycle along on your next trip, then you need a bicycle rack.  How about roof racks by Thule, Yakima, or Rocky Mount?  You may be surprised that the roof can actually carry your bicycle snugly and without damage.

Bicycle racks keep you from trying to fit the bicycle in your car-that technique doesn't work.  What kind of racks can you get?  There's the rack that uses a fork mount, like the Yakima 2000 Viper, which fits square and round crossbars.  This rack fits many tire sizes and you can lock it with SKS cores, which are sold separately.

Or you can use a bicycle carrier instead.  You can attach the carrier to the car's rear.  If you have a spare tire here, no problem because some carriers have room for the spare. 

For instance, the Taiwan Bike Rack Company sells a carrier that can hold two bicycles, and mounts on the spare tire bracket.  Some spare mounts may not be able to take the weight of the rack and bicycles, so you should check with your car manufacturer. 

You might also get a bicycle cover to protect your investment (the bicycle) in all kinds of weather.  One cover that's made of PVC, a strong material that resists tearing, is the Brookstone cover.  This large cover comes in green or khaki and it will also protect your bicycle from moisture and dirt.

Let's say you and three friends want to drive together to a biking trail.  You need a bicycle rack that can hold four bicycles.  And that's not impossible:   Swagman's Towing Rack can carry up to four bicycles and installs with a two-inch receiver, the steel hole some vehicles have under the rear bumper.

If you like to use a trunk mount and want access to the car trunk, a fold down is a good feature to have.  For instance, the Advantage ASR24 carrier slants 45 degrees when you want to open the trunk.

To protect your bicycle rack from thieves, you can use deadbolt locks, cable locks, or locking knobs.  Certain devices work with some racks and not others, so you should consider compatibility when deciding on a locking device.
